According to Money Digest, the average American spends $148 per month on fast food.

After a long and hectic day at work, cooking a meal from scratch often feels like another item on an already overwhelming to-do list. Fast food franchises have mastered the art of convenience, offering quick and reliable meal options that fit seamlessly into busy lifestyles. The data underscores this trend: a 2020 survey revealed that over 70% of participants choose fast food primarily for its convenience.

They fill a necessary gap in the average person’s increasingly busy life and that’s why, by and large, business is booming. But which franchises offer the perfect combo of expansion and profitability?

Here’s our list of the Top 20 Restaurant Franchises in North America in 2024.

But before we begin our list, let's establish the criteria we used to create it.

We ranked the top 20 restaurant franchises based on the same criteria that we
used for last year’s list:

  • Number of franchises
  • Number of years in business
  • Annual revenue
  • Specialties and how they managed to grow

Let’s dig in.‍

McDonald’s continues to evolve as an iconic global brand in 2024, pushing the boundaries of innovation and customer experience while staying true to its roots. The Golden Arches are now synonymous not just with classic favorites like the Big Mac and Chicken McNuggets, but also with new ventures such as “CosMc’s”, their spin-off beverage-focused chain launched in late 2023.

In addition to expanding its footprint globally and launching 10,000 new locations by 2027, McDonald’s is also refreshing its signature menu. Upgrades include juicier beef patties, meltier cheese, fresher toppings, and softer, thicker brioche buns to enhance quality. New items like the Double Big Mac and the Chicken Big Mac are drawing rave reviews, while test runs of the Big Arch burger hint at a bold future direction.

McDonald’s has also embraced cutting-edge technology, partnering with Google Cloud to integrate AI into its mobile app and service platforms, optimizing customer interactions and improving speed and efficiency.

Starbucks continues to lead the global coffeehouse market, renowned for its premium coffee, handcrafted espresso drinks, and inviting atmosphere. With over 40,000 stores in 80 countries — with 8,000 new stores opening since 2023 — the brand has become synonymous with modern coffee culture, offering an array of beverages from classic brews to innovative seasonal creations. However, 2024 marks a transformative year for the coffee giant as new CEO Brian Niccol sets out to revitalize the brand’s in-store experience.

Starbucks is doubling down on its identity as a coffeehouse, reintroducing ceramic mugs for in-store beverages and bringing back its coffee condiments bar — a feature beloved by customers before its removal during the pandemic. Store designs will shift to include warmer textures, comfortable seating, and a more welcoming ambiance, with an emphasis on creating spaces that encourage customers to linger and connect. These changes align with Niccol’s vision to restore Starbucks as a hub for community gatherings while catering to baristas' calls for a greater focus on dining room experiences.

Additionally, Subway announced a major partnership with PepsiCo, set to begin in 2025, replacing Coca-Cola products after nearly two decades. This long-term agreement includes a continued collaboration with Frito-Lay, ensuring customers can enjoy popular snacks alongside PepsiCo beverages. These initiatives highlight Subway’s commitment to evolving its offerings and strengthening its global presence.

But most importantly for consumers: They just keep serving up the same old favorites time and time again, in a manner that’s at least healthier than greasy fries and burgers.
